10/10 FOR ONAY'S SAYGUN CONCERTOS CD

As part of their Saygun series, the German CPO label recently released Gülsin Onay's new recording of both his piano concertos, partnered by Howard Griffiths and the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra. Already the CD has received high critical acclaim:

In the top German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the reviewer Gerhard Koch, introducing Saygun as, "The Turkish Bartok", writes "... The performers of this recording deliver a remarkable plea for this highly original composer."

In "Klassik Heute", the distinguished Austrian music writer and critic Peter Cosse scores the CD 10/10 overall. Writing that Gulsin Onay "refines everything with an amazing energy and the finest of nuance" he concludes: "In this recording the Turkish-Western slalom becomes brilliant, with quick reactions, when necessary hesitant or even melancholy, no matter whether it is purely solistic, purely orchestral or a fusion of the two."

In Classicstoday.com, David Hurwitz rates the album 10/10 for both artistic and sound quality: "The First Concerto dates from the 1950s, the Second (composed for the splendid soloist on this recording) from the 1980s... I've been pushing Saygun's distinctive, masterful body of work for years, but if you haven't taken the plunge then this excellently engineered disc makes a great place to start".
