Welcoming 2008 with a busy recording and concert schedule, Gülsin Onay gave the first concert of the year to benefit UNICEF. She was then at the Kremlin Festival, performing Chopin’s 2nd Piano Concerto on 15 January and right after that in Germany where “she conjured glistening strings of pearls from the piano” at her recitals.

Gülsin Onay started 2008 in full swing; first recording a CD selection of “Night Music” and then giving her first concert of the year as a gift to UNICEF. On 15 January, Onay was at the Kremlin Palace.

Gülsin Onay was the guest of the 12th “Christmas at the Kremlin” Festival, where she gave a concert at the Kremlin Palace on the 15th of January. Honoured with a Polish State Medal for her Chopin playing, the virtuoso pianist played Chopin’s 2nd Piano Concerto with the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra. Her performance was met with a standing ovation from the Russian audience at the sold-out concert.

Having performed for the fifth time in Russia, Gülsin Onay then flew to Northern Germany, where she gave two sold-out recitals: Leichlingen on the 20th and Hamm on the 21st of January. She again won high praises from public and press with her performances of Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Saygun and Ravel.

Solinger Tageblatt: Pearls from the Steinway piano

Gülsin Onay’s recital in Leichlingen was reviewed in the Solinger Tageblatt as, “internationally known pianist delighted all with her performance, which united extreme technical brilliance with a sensitive interpretation… she conjured glistening strings of pearls from the Steinway piano”.

Westfälische Anzeiger announced the Hamm concert as: “Pianist Gülsin Onay’s playing creates an orchestral effect”.
